Jess Thinking

As It Is in Heaven

What does God require of us
but to love mercy?

“Good Samaritans” show mercy with reckless abandon because they understand the risky, sticky nature of mercy

Brand New

While there’s nothing inherently wrong with nicknames, they can be cruel and crushing.

Dale Wallace had asked me to do the lecture at Men's Community Bible Study the Monday evening before Thanksgiving 2002. Dale is a gifted lecturer and lawyer. Normally I would have simply written down some points and talked, but I felt compelled to write a manuscript, which for me is an eye-magnet! I played off of Acts 11:26: "The disciples were first called Christians at Antioch."

Lessons Learned Late

Too late on a rainy Wednesday evening. But late has become my way of life.

Written late(!) one evening in November 2002, I found myself compelled to write this, well, I don't know what it is! I sub-titled it "Heaven may not be as dull as we though it was." It was my attempt to bring together to things I don't understand: why we never have enough time for friends and what in the world...er, I mean, in heaven, or we going to do for eternity. (This article is still being written...I keep on finding hits.)

Overheard Overtime

I live in a state where babies
are born crying “War Eagle”
or “Roll Tide”.

There I was sitting in the Anchorage Restaurant, my favorite morning haunt, when my unintentional eavesdropping landed me smack-dab-in-the-middle of an article I had not intended to write, but then could do nothing but borrow a pen and paper and go at it. I forced my unsuspecting staff, bleary-eyed from too much pigskin action, to endure my reading it aloud to them. My pastor loved it and force-fed it to our faith family through the Sunday bulletin.

Making Peace

There lies within each of us
that deep, persistent
yearning to be at peace.

Peace has never been humanity's strong suit. Man came into the world with rebellion in his heart. Peace has always eluded our grasp. This article is a revision of a narrative written for the Senior High Youth Choir of Eastern Hills Bapist Church, Montgomery, AL. The kids performed this in Pennsylvania as part of a mission trip.

Near to the [Hurting]
Heart of God

No one ever births
a relationship of any kind expecting to be hurt.

When I am brave enough to look at myself through without excuses and pride through from heaven's vantage point, I am amazed at how really bad I am and how really good God is. I wwrote this after having to confront an employee with a problem he refused to acknowledge readily. Later, as I wrote this as a letter to him, I realized that it was as much for me as it was for him. To only man did God grant the power and freedom to break His own heart. I do stand amazed!

Thoughts on "Follow Me"

"Follow Me" is a troubling and challenging reminder that following Christ is always about a cross that is very real...

In the Fall of 2003 I met a young man who would radically impact my life. God used Eric Lovett to show me things about myself that no one before had ever done. I introduced Eric to the Lead Like Jesus movement. In January 2004, he and a friend, Adam Lancaster, wrote "Follow Me", a powerful song with a potent message. Listening to the song and thinking about how we would interpret the song in a music video, I wrote the following background.

My Cousins Still
Tickle Me

From my earliest recollection, the faces and voices of cousins haunt my mind.

One of the books I want to write -- People of My Years -- celebrates those people who have helped shape my life. Early one morning I awoke with this memory from more than 40 years ago fresh on my mind and heart.

Into the Highways
and Hedges

THE church ought to be smack dab in the middle of things we find at odds with our faith and its teachings.

For many people and for many years advertising has been suspect as a way of communicating salvation's story to the lost. I've often pondered WWJD in this case. The answer is best found, perhaps, not in WWJD, but in WDJD...what did Jesus do?
